Statement on our support of the Terra Carta

We would like to announce with deep regret that we will no longer be listed as signatories of the Terra Carta.

Gassy Cat was one of the early signatories of the Terra Carta, applying immediately as a signatory to the ambitious pledge in 2021 following its announcement, knowing well that we already complied above and beyond the goals of the pledge. However, since becoming a signatory it has become apparent that the Terra Carta has become a marketing vehicle for greenwashing by large corporations.

We have been thoroughly disappointed with the Sustainable Markets Initiative, the organisation under HRH The Prince of Wales who administers the Terra Carta, both in their communication and execution. We feel that the potential of the Terra Carta to make an effective difference environmentally is severely hampered by the addition of signatories from petroleum companies, and investment bankers who have made sizable increases in investment in the petroleum industry this year as a way to capitalise on current market events at the expense of the planet.

We further feel that the manner in which HRH The Prince of Wales has conducted his financial affairs sullies the activities of the Sustainable Markets Initiative and the foundation of the Terra Carta.

After much consideration, we have taken the difficult decision to no longer continue as a signatory to the Terra Carta — not because we disagree with the values of the pledge, but because we feel the pledge has ambiguous value due to the execution.

We believe actions speak louder than words, and we will continue to fight to make high quality, ethically produced, and environmentally sustainable products as we always have done so. The proof — as they say — is in the pudding.
